Garden shoot and more

If my last post was old this one is vintage...probably 1993.

As soon as I discovered 3200 speed I fell in love with the grain and the ability to get shots at low light...but I wasn't always content with 3200...I often pushed to 12800.

I was in college when I took these shot and my friends had no jobs...so shooting at night was easy. Some of us went to the Cleveland Botanical Garden and we did a photo shoot. The only light around was the moon and one garden light.

I often show this last shot with the others...same model and same mood. This was shot on a trip to Jamaica and it was impromptu...this is why it's good to always have a camera handy.

Phoebe 45 fashion show

This stuff is quite old. I'm guessing from 1998. I had the opportunity to shoot a fashion show by the Chicago store Phoebe 45 for a free paper called New City.

When I goto to the venue I looked at how many photographers were there...a lot...and we all had basically the same cameras and film. I didn't want to do the same shots as everyone else so I took a second to think.

I still had an hour before the show so I hopped in my car, ran home and grabbed my crappy Minolta x-700 (a camera I still love to this day) and a bunch of 3200 speed film.

Headed back to the show and photographed it. That would never happen now...people all shoot the same cameras, it's all digital so you can mess with a lot, however given the choice I'd dial the ISO up if I found myself in this sort of situation again...I feel it's so much cooler than color with flash.

Hotel Roosevelt photo shoot

3 years ago to the day I was on top of the Hotel Roosevelt for an impromptu photo shoot. I was there for work...Target was hosting an X games party and I was there to capture it and do a photo shoot of Shaun White.

In that last post I missed one of my favorite shots of Shaun kicking my TTV camera so here that is.

I also had the opportunity to photograph a fitness model...ON TOP OF THE HOTEL...so of course I jumped at that. I wouldn't normally include so many shots but we took a lot...it was good fun and a great environment to shoot in...and yeah she's cute.

Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum: re:DESIGN

While at Target we had the chance to work on a pro-bono project for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (If you find yourself in New York it's a great place to check out.) The project was to create a kit to mail out to supporters and influencers in order raise $250 million to renovate the museum.

We came up with the name re:DESIGN because the museum is all about design and because the capital campaign was to gain funds to redesign the museum. The book was designed to mirror familiar look of a Moleskine notebook...a notebook that is ubiquitous in the design community. Each section of the book had a title that followed the double entendre of the title. Sections include re:DISCOVER, re:IMAGINE, re:DRAW re:EDUCATE, re:ASSURE, re:NEW and re:ACT.

Letterhead was created to follow the same look and feel. The colon in the word re:DESIGN was drilled out in both the book and the letterhead envelope.

The campaign was wildly successful and the monetary goal was upped and more books were printed.

I found an article about how the song came to be...the gist is that it is lyric-less because of a fear of Soviet censorship. The performer Eduard Khil is quoted as saying "We knew then that we had to give the song something special to make it work"

Art if Recycled Skateboard Decks

I found this link a few weeks ago and thougth the work was brilliant. It's by an artist named Haroshi who takes old skateboards and makes them into beautiful pieces of art. I dig it for a couple reasons, first it's great that it uses old skate decks that have snapped or are just old and would normally be trashed. Also I just really like that they are skateboards which are by nature really colorful but used in this way they transform into really colorful art while still maintaining the quality of real wood.

Quite possibly my favorite project

There are a few reasons this was one of my favorite projects. I got to work with one of my favorite copywriters (who is now an actor), Shawn Boyd. An awesome illustrator and now a friend Jesse LeDoux. It was for a great cause, St Jude Children's Research Hospital. And it was one of the most collaborative projects I've ever worked on.

Shawn and I got the assignment which concept themes for 4 carnivals that Target sponsors at their Target House at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Elements for the events included these posters, t-shirts and signage at the events.

We knew right away that we wanted Jesse LeDoux to work on it...but the problem was we were asked to use a licensed property that Target was working with. Just before the 11th hour we realized that we weren't going to get the stuff we needed from that property...so we pitched our original ideas with Jesse as our illustrator.

The ideas were sold in easily but we ran into problem number 2...Jesse was busy and in Japan.

But we knew his weakness...he always wanted to design an amusement park which is why our first illustration is a water ride.

Once that first carnival was in the bag we started on the other. We had phone calls at weird times because of the time difference. Heard great stories of Jesse's new finds in Japanese vending machines and saw a picture of him holding a bottle of vodka with a cobra in it.

We also had awesome brainstorm that were really colloborative with Jesse, Shawn and me all throwing out the weirdest things we could think to add to the posters to make them fun.

That's why you'll see a fish fishing, a pig in a blanket sleepin under a bed, a bouncer with a paddle ball, and an elephant dressed as himself for a Halloween party.

Truly a great project to work on and we couldn't have pulled it off with any other illustrator. Check out Jesse's site here. If you need and illustrator for an upcoming project I highly recommend him.

Every week I do a small infographic of what my son's life looks like by the numbers. But I decided to make it bigger for the first month.

When I first moved to Chicago I would see this dude fly through downtown traffic on a skateboard being propelled by crutches. Then occasionally I'd see him on the street gliding, almost like he was floating or skating on ice, with the help of his crutches.

He blew me away. Unfortunatley I never met him because he was faster than me or too far away.

Then later I saw Cirque du Soleil's Varekai...there were performers floating and moving like the guy I saw years earlier...I was still mesmorized.

A year after that I saw a making of Varekai...I learned that the guy I saw was the one who taught the Cirque perfomers how to move. That guy who floated and moved like no one I had ever seen before is named Bill Shannon.

He has a degenerative condition in his legs that make it hard for him to walk, so he's learned to adapt and get around on his modified crutches and skateboard. But even more impressive is that he used his love of dance to create a whole new style of movement.

Black History Month 2008: Dream in Color

After a successful 2007 Dream in Color campaign Target decided to keep with the theme. However we wanted to evolve the concept a bit.

We brought Black Design in to help with the campaign and we continued to work with Kwaku Alston as the campaign photographer.

The multi-channel campaign included Broadcast, web, print, educational promotions and more.

We got to work with some amazing people including John Legend, Iman, Debbie Allen, Holly Robinson-Peete and more.

Black History Month 2007: Maya Angelou

This had to have been one of the greatest experiences I've had in marketing. I inherited a 2006 Black History Month program called Dream in Color. Originally it featured some kids from Target's Start Something program. For the second year the task was simply to make the program bigger.

Working with my copywriter, Steve Chirhart, we came up with the idea to feature storytellers. We also wanted to extend Dream in Color into a holistic diversity program encompassing Black History Month, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.

For Black History Month our idea was to showcase slam poets. Then we found we had a connection to Maya Angelou.

Since she's one of the greatest storytellers we jumped on the chance to work with her and tweaked the concept a bit.

The campaign included photography for print and promotions as well as video for broadcast. We also had Dr. Angelou write out a poem that we reprinted as a gift for VIP friends of Target.

The photo shoot was amazing. It took place in her house. Our photographer was Kwaku Alston. His name came to mind because he was a college friend of a friend of mine in Chicago. I always kept his name in mind in case I had a project that was right for him.

The night before the shoot we took a look at location shots of Dr. Angelou's house. One of those shots was of her piano...on that piano was a photo that Kwaku took of Dr. Angelou a few years back for an Oprah Legends photo shoot.

When we arrived at Dr. Angelou's house her niece invited us in. We set up while Dr. Angelou got ready. When she came out I was surprised, she is a tall woman. For some reason I was expecting someone shorter.

In the first 5 minutes of chatting with her I was blown away...everything she says is poetry. During the actual shoot she was a riot...she even told me she like my hair (a guess you'd call it a messy faux-hawk.)

After the shoot we ate with her and got to chat more. She recounted stories of her life. I had read some years ago but I had forgotten. To hear them from her was amazing.

The black and white image above is one of my most cherished photos. To capture her in a great moment being photographed by an amazing photographer was so cool for me.

The printed piece is a spread from a booklet that was in Esquire magazine and in a educational piece mailed to schools. Little & Company helped with the layout for that piece.

Classic Winter X Games: if 2007 is classic

In 2007 when I was working at Target I had the fortune to go to the Winter X-games to grab some behind the scenes shots of the Target Chalet. A few of the action sports athletes that Target sponsors stayed at the chalet while others just came to crash, hang out or rock out at night.

I started my career as a photographer but I got that start in the late 80's when I attended Woodward Camp. I was there for biking and loved it, but on the first day of the second week I re-injured my separated shoulder...no more riding that second week...so I took the photo class they offered.

While at these X Games I got to meet Gary Ream the head of Woodward. I let him know that without his camp I wouldn't have gotten into my career even though it moved from photography to creative direction. It was a great moment as we reminisced about the camp then and he told me how it had grown.

Another great part was that I got to hang out with Mat Hoffman. He's one of the biggest riders in BMX freestyle and I was a fan of him in the mid 80's when I was riding. It was awesome hanging out with him. Later that year I got to go to his house for a quick shoot.

Target 2008 Martin Luther King Day giveaway

This site is meant to be a combination of my work and work that inspires me. I thought I'd start adding some of my work and this piece seems to fit today.

the project:
2008 MLK Day giveaway

the brief:
Create a unique piece of art, to use as a takeaway at Target sponsored MLK Day events, that connects target to Dr. King’s legacy of community service.

the idea:
Work with Amos Paul Kennedy to weave an MLK quote, the ‘I Am a Man’ message from the Memphis Sanitation worker strike and Target’s CR messaging to create an impactful visual.

the result:
The process of working with Amos was fantastic and the posters he created were amazing. We used a favorite to create this poster. Our regional teams felt the piece was great and our guests loved it too.

the story:
Here is a little film about Amos Kennedy that lives on youtube you’ll see that he’s a pretty interesting man. We made the mistake of calling him an artist and designer but he quickly corrected us by saying he’s just the guy who lays down type. Even though he says he’s no artist and the prints we commissioned came in a box that formerly held frying chickens (no necks or gizzards) we thought they were all beautiful.

With movies and books like Super Size Me, The Omnivores Dilemma, Fast Food Inc and more I think it's important to know where your food is coming from.

Luckily Jason Freeny, who has done work for MTV, Nickelodeon, Juxtapoz, Wired and many more, has come to the rescue with these fabulous illustrations.

He also shows what's inside some of our childhood fave toys.

Lost Generation video and it's influence

Lost generation is a video that's making the rounds on YouTube right now. Made by a 20 year old for an AARP u@50 contest...it's a fantastic concept.

However the idea was taken from a 2006 Cannes Lion Contest Silver lion winning spot by Salvaglio/TBWA.

The creator of the Lost Generation video posted a link to the Truth video once a there was a video response with a link to Truth.

In the ad game so many ideas are borrowed...I wish the originals got credit more often. I'm not sure if the original would have gotten credit if someone didn't notice. And I'm guessing that someone wrote a poem that can be read forward and backward before the Truth spot was made.

But like I said it happens all the time.

Men of a Certain Age opening credits

I'm really digging the title sequence to Men of a Certain Age. The lo-fi snippets set up the theme of the show because they are all something any guy can relate to. And the kid that comes up with Scott Bakula's credit is just hilarious as a psuedo-young Scott.

Or maybe It just makes me feel sappy because I'm going to have a kid soon.

Author Mike Heppner came up with a new way to drop his third novella...he actually dropped it.

You can't buy a printed but, can't read it online...the only way to read it is to find one of the 500 random copies dropped throughout various cities.

Each copy of the book has a pdf included explaining what to do if you find the book.

Every time I'm in NYC I think of this video of a really nice critique of the ad business from AAA and G.R.L.

According to the info on the YouTube the inspiration came from Abstractor TV which is actually quite a cool idea and looks beautiful.

I just stumpled upon The Selby a website for Photographer Todd Selby...his one liner for the site is: the selby features photographs, paintings and videos by todd selby of interesting people and their creative spaces. Really beautiful images and when you click on one it shows detail photos and an interview. The interview reminds me of Matt Pashkow's book Inspirability...one of my fav books.

I saw a post on consumerist.com that was asking about magical new that was seen in a DC subway...it's been around for years (actually since 1843 but not on a subway until recently) but it's cool so I'm showing some examples here...Target did this in NYC too but I can't find a good quality video on YouTube.

These all make me long for living in a city again...a city with good public transportation...one that I can walk out of my front door and have 8 bars and 12 restaurants within a 1 block radius instead of a Chili's a short car ride away...although I do have an Indian place that rivals Devon St. in Chicago and it's only 6 minutes away by car...but still.

Found this on USA Today (via San Diego Union tribune)...there are so many things that are wrong about this but I think it's absolutely brilliant in a totally evil way. What company wants to have their brand associated with the something most kids hate? Some of the ad space is from parents offering inspirational messages, but others do come from area businesses...hmm.

I was never really a Guns N' Roses fan and I think Dr. Pepper is okay...but I think this rocks. Sometime in March Dr. Pepper said it would give everyone in America a free soda if GNR dropped it's Chinese Democracy album in 2008. The album drops November 23 and DP is holding up their offer...free DP coupons available for 24 hours Sunday the 23rd on their website.

I found an article via omgposters.com titled “Obama: A Poster Collector’s Perspective”. It's about how poster art blossomed in this campaign more than any campaign since 1972, when folks like Warhol and Peter Max were creating art for McGovern.

The image below isn't mentioned in the article, but it is one of my favs. Jason Urban created a double sided Obama/McCain poster for an art installation.

Saw this on Consumerist, to get with the times Pepsi has decided to create an animated logo...good idea...but they also changed their static logo too. I love the new soda packaging but think the logo is unfortunate. Below is a video of their logos from the first to the new on...I think some of the super old flourishy ones rock.

I've never really cared much about airport terminals. They're really just places where I almost get arrested for talking back to TSA and then have to sit on a sticky seat or super dirty floor while I wait for my smelly plane.
